A dangerous and fast-moving bushfire has triggered an urgent emergency warning for parts of Western Australia's Harvey Shire, with authorities telling residents their lives are at risk and they must leave immediately if safe to do so.
Critical Danger Zone and Evacuation Routes
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) issued the emergency alert at 11.54am on Tuesday, 30 December 2025. The warning covers areas within Wellesley, Parkfield, Benger, and Wokalup, bounded by Forrest Highway, Marriott Road, Wellesley Road North, Treasure Road, and Rhodes Road.
DFES has declared the fire is not contained or controlled and is moving in a west north-westerly direction. Residents have been given clear evacuation instructions: leave west via Wellesley Road North or south via Forrest Highway. Travel east on Wellesley Road is prohibited.
An evacuation centre has been established at the Leschenault Leisure Centre for those requiring immediate shelter. Residents are strongly advised not to wait, as leaving at the last minute is extremely dangerous.
Life-Saving Advice for Those in the Fire's Path
The DFES alert delivered a stark message: "This is a dangerous fire. You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive." For those who become trapped in their vehicles, instructions are to park away from bushes, cover with a woollen blanket, and get onto the floor as windows may shatter from intense radiant heat.
For people who find it is now too late or unsafe to leave, preparing to shelter indoors is critical. DFES advises to close all doors and windows, turn off evaporative air conditioners, and move to a room with running water and a clear exit, like a kitchen or laundry.
Ongoing Threat and Community Warnings
Firefighting crews are actively battling the blaze, but DFES stresses the situation remains highly volatile and can change rapidly. The extreme heat from the fire can be deadly well before flames are visible.
Residents not currently at home have been warned that it is too dangerous to return to the emergency warning area. All community members are urged to stay alert to official DFES warnings and updates as conditions evolve throughout the day.
