A rapidly spreading bushfire has triggered an Emergency Warning for the Boddington Gold Mine area, with authorities issuing urgent directives for workers and residents to evacuate immediately to save their lives.
Critical Threat Prompts Urgent Evacuation Order
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) escalated the alert to an emergency level just before 4:30pm on Wednesday, 24 December 2025. The fire, which remains out of control, is moving in a north-westerly direction, posing a severe and immediate threat to lives and homes.
DFES has instructed all individuals within the vicinity of the Boddington Gold Mine, located across Bannister and Boddington, to leave without delay. The clear message is: "You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive." The designated evacuation route is south via Gold Mine Road.
Scale of the Blaze and Official Safety Instructions
The bushfire has already consumed approximately 300 hectares of land. In response to the escalating danger, DFES has provided critical guidance for those in the fire's path.
If the way is clear, people must leave now for a safer place, such as the home of family or friends well away from the affected zone. Authorities stress that waiting is not an option, as leaving at the last minute is extremely dangerous.
Evacuees should take their emergency kit. For those who become trapped in their vehicle, the instructions are to park away from dense vegetation, cover up with a woollen blanket, and get down on the floor, as windows may shatter from the intense radiant heat.
What to Do If You Cannot Leave
For individuals who find it too dangerous to evacuate, preparing to shelter in place is essential. This must be done well before the fire front arrives, as extreme heat can be fatal before flames are even visible.
People should move to a room with two key features: running water, like a kitchen or laundry, and a clear exit for potential escape. It is crucial to close all doors and windows and to turn off evaporative air conditioners, though keeping water running through the system if possible is advised.
DFES also emphasised that it is too dangerous for anyone not currently at home to attempt to return to the threatened area.
A separate Watch and Act warning is currently active for zones surrounding the Boddington Gold Mine, indicating a significant threat in the broader region.
