Christmas Day Bushfire Emergency: Boddington Gold Mine and Town Under Threat
Boddington Bushfire Alert on Christmas Day

Firefighters are locked in a desperate battle to control a dangerous bushfire threatening a major mining operation and a regional town on Christmas Day.

Emergency Warning Issued for Boddington Mine and Surrounds

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) issued a critical bushfire alert on 25 December 2025, warning residents in and around the town of Boddington, located south-east of Perth. The emergency warning specifically states it is now too late to leave the Boddington Gold Mine area, as fire has impacted key evacuation routes.

The alert covers people at the mine site itself and in areas east and south of the mine, including Bannister and Wuraming. Authorities delivered a stark message: "You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive. There is a threat to lives and homes."

What Residents Must Do Immediately

For those under the Emergency Warning, DFES has issued urgent survival instructions. As leaving is no longer safe, individuals must immediately identify a room to shelter in, preferably one with running water like a kitchen or laundry, and a clear exit path.

Key actions include:

  • Sheltering well before the fire arrives, as radiant heat is deadly.
  • Closing all doors and windows.
  • Turning off evaporative air conditioners but keeping water running through the system if possible.
  • Monitoring for spot fires and embers both inside and outside the home.
  • Wearing strong leather boots for protection.
  • If the home becomes unsafe, moving to an area that has already been burnt.

Anyone in immediate danger is urged to call Triple Zero (000).

Watch and Act Alerts for Broader Region

Broader Watch and Act alerts are also active for parts of Bannister, Wuraming, and Boddington, indicating a possible threat to lives and homes as conditions change. Residents in these zones must stay alert, have their bushfire survival plan ready, and be prepared to act.

A separate Bushfire Advice message is current for the Boddington townsite and surrounding areas in Bannister, Marradong, and Ranford, where there is currently no direct threat but vigilance is required.

Fire Behaviour and Response Efforts

The bushfire is reported to be moving in a north-westerly direction and is not contained or controlled. It has already burnt through approximately 442 hectares of land.

Firefighting efforts are extensive. Ground crews are being actively supported by aerial water bombers. In a significant show of local support, crews and machinery from the Newmont Mine Site are assisting emergency response teams on the ground.

Road closures are in effect, including Gold Mine Access Road and various mine site access tracks. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the entire area.

Power Outages and Animal Welfare

The fire has disrupted essential services. Western Power has reported that electricity supply to parts of Ranford, Bannister, Marradong, Lower Hotham, and Boddington has been affected.

Authorities are also reminding residents to activate their animal welfare plans. Pet and livestock owners should follow advice from Local Government Authorities to protect their animals while prioritising their own safety.

The public is advised to stay informed via Emergency WA, the DFES website, ABC Local Radio, or by calling 13 DFES (13 3337). Updates are being issued hourly unless the situation changes.
