Tasmania's East Coast Ravaged: 19 Homes Destroyed in Dolphin Sands Bushfire
19 homes destroyed in Tasmania's Dolphin Sands bushfire

A devastating bushfire has ripped through Tasmania's east coast, destroying at least 19 homes and leaving a community in shock. The out-of-control inferno struck the rural town of Dolphin Sands, an area still recovering from property losses during the 2023 bushfire season.

Community Faces Heartbreaking Losses

Tasmania Fire Service Commissioner confirmed the loss of the 19 houses, with the blaze scorching approximately 700 hectares of land. Two firefighters sustained injuries while battling the flames. The community of Dolphin Sands, familiar with fire trauma, now faces a long and difficult recovery.

A Watch and Act warning remains active for Dolphin Sands and surrounding regions. TASalert, the state's official emergency warning system, continues to advise residents that it is not safe for them to return to their properties. An evacuation centre is operating at the Swansea Town Hall for those displaced.

Critical Infrastructure Severely Damaged

The fire's impact extends beyond homes, causing significant damage to essential services. TasNetworks reported that 25 power poles were destroyed in the Dolphin Sands area, leading to prolonged outages.

Approximately 270 local customers are expected to be without power for at least a week, the power company stated. Crews have only just gained access to assess the full extent of the damage and will begin repairs as soon as conditions are safe.

"Our thoughts are with people who may have lost property, or are waiting anxiously to find out," a TasNetworks spokesperson said. Damage from other bushfire-caused outages around Liawenee and Miena is believed to be less severe.

Firefighting Efforts Continue Amid Challenging Conditions

Regional Fire Commander Simon Pilkington said crews would focus on containing the Dolphin Sands and Glenlusk fires. While a severe weather warning for damaging winds has been downgraded, the situation remains volatile.

"We are aware of property losses in Dolphin Sands, and will be completing rapid impact assessments this morning to confirm the extent of this, when safe to do so," Pilkington said. He expressed confidence that Friday's more favourable weather would aid firefighting efforts.

Firefighting strategies include both ground crews and aerial resources. Officials commended community members who sought safety at Bagots Point overnight, highlighting the importance of following emergency advice.
