Shire of Murray Launches Healthy Habitats Program to Boost Environmental Protection
Applications have officially opened for the Shire of Murray's Healthy Habitats program, a significant initiative designed to assist rural landholders in safeguarding the native environment. This program focuses on strengthening biodiversity outcomes and increasing canopy cover across the Murray region by promoting the creation, enhancement, and protection of native vegetation, wetlands, threatened ecological communities, and wildlife habitats on private properties.
Eligibility and Support Details for Participants
To be eligible for participation, land must be zoned as rural, special rural, or rural residential, cover more than one hectare in size, and be located within the Shire of Murray. Successful applicants will benefit from a comprehensive site visit and ecological assessment, which includes tailored management advice, assistance with securing funding, and ongoing bushland management support to ensure long-term environmental health.
Funding Opportunities and Program Goals
Shire president Douglas McLarty has announced that grant funding ranging from $100 to $1000 is available for approved materials. Residents can apply for this funding to support a variety of eligible activities, such as fencing and access control, weed and animal pest control, revegetation of degraded areas, habitat restoration efforts, and the installation of habitat boxes or tubes. The program aims to protect threatened flora and fauna species, safeguard critical habitats and nesting hollows for species like Black Cockatoos, increase urban canopy cover, improve vegetation condition and species diversity, and rehabilitate natural areas on private land.
Alignment with Broader Environmental Aspirations
This initiative aligns closely with the shire's planet aspiration, emphasizing the protection and sustainability of natural areas for future generations. The project receives support from funding provided by the WA Government's State NRM Program, highlighting a collaborative effort to enhance environmental stewardship.
