Federal Government Invests Over $1.7 Million in Samson Park Enhancements
The Federal Government has announced a significant funding commitment of more than $1.7 million to support major upgrades at Samson Park, Fremantle's largest natural park. This investment, part of an election pledge, aims to address key environmental and recreational needs in the community.
Key Upgrades and Ecological Improvements
The funding will be utilized by the City of Fremantle to implement a comprehensive range of improvements. These include upgrading drainage systems to mitigate seasonal flooding, which has been a persistent issue in the area. Additionally, the project will focus on enhancing the park's ecological health through the planting of native vegetation and the creation of a seasonal wetland to support local biodiversity.
Samson Park is a vital habitat for over 50 species of birds, reptiles, and bats, making these ecological measures crucial for conservation efforts. The upgrades will also involve installing educational signage to raise awareness about the park's natural features and the importance of environmental stewardship.
Community and Recreational Enhancements
Beyond environmental benefits, the funding will support the development of a network of paths and boardwalks to improve public access and connectivity within the park. This includes realigning stormwater drainage infrastructure to ensure better water management and reduce flood risks.
The park's grassed area, which bisects the space, is a popular recreation spot featuring a fenced children's playground, barbecue facilities, a basketball court, and a small toilet block. These amenities will be maintained and potentially enhanced as part of the broader upgrade plans, making the park more inviting for families and visitors.
Government and Local Support for the Project
Fremantle MHR Josh Wilson expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting its role in conserving and protecting the urban bushland. "I am rapt to support the City of Fremantle, the Samson precinct, and the tireless efforts of the Friends of Samson Park in their work to conserve and protect this urban bushland treasure at the heart of the Samson community," he said. "These upgrades will embed Samson Park as a beloved local ecosystem for families for many years to come."
Federal Environment and Water Minister Murray Watt emphasized the project's dual benefits for people and wildlife. "This project will make improvements to Samson Park, which will encourage new plants and animals to settle in, while also making it visually appealing and more practical for the community," Mr Watt stated.
Local Government Plans and Community Consultation
The City of Fremantle unanimously endorsed a master plan and management plan for Samson Park in February, paving the way for these upgrades. Mayor Ben Lawver noted that the drainage works will enable a range of planned improvements over the next few years. "These plans, developed in consultation with the community, Elders, and technical experts, will improve bush health, enhance public access, and renew ageing infrastructure," he explained.
This collaborative approach ensures that the upgrades align with community needs and environmental goals, fostering a sustainable and accessible park for future generations.
