Patricia Greene, the actress who portrayed Jill Archer in the BBC Radio 4 soap opera The Archers for more than six decades, has died at the age of 93. Her agent confirmed the news on Monday, paying tribute to her remarkable career and dedication to the role.
A Life on the Airwaves
Greene joined The Archers in 1957, taking on the role of Jill Archer, the matriarch of the Archer family. She appeared in over 8,000 episodes, making her the longest-serving cast member in the show's history. Her character was known for her warmth, resilience, and strong moral compass, often serving as the voice of reason in Ambridge.
Born in 1932 in London, Greene trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before beginning her career in theatre and television. She made her first appearance on The Archers in an episode broadcast on 2 July 1957, originally as a minor character before being promoted to a regular role.
An Iconic Role
Over the years, Greene's portrayal of Jill Archer earned her a devoted following. The character was involved in some of the show's most memorable storylines, including the death of her husband Phil Archer in 2010 and her own battle with cancer in 2015. Greene's performance was praised for its authenticity and emotional depth.
In a statement, the BBC said: "Patricia Greene was a wonderful actress and a beloved member of The Archers family. Her portrayal of Jill Archer touched the lives of millions of listeners over the years. She will be deeply missed."
Tributes and Legacy
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans. The Archers actor Tim Bentinck, who played David Archer, said: "Patricia was the heart of The Archers. She brought such warmth and humanity to the role. It was an honour to work with her."
Greene retired from the role in 2020, with her final episode broadcast on 1 January 2021. The character was written out as moving to live with her daughter in New Zealand. Greene's contribution to British radio drama was recognised with an MBE in 2010 for services to drama.
She is survived by her son, Julian, and her grandchildren. Her husband, the actor John Ringham, died in 2008.
