Hunter Photography Prize Crowns Alpaca Image as Winner

Euan Wilcox has been awarded the prestigious Hunter Photography Prize for his striking image titled Mother and Daughter, which features alpacas on his Laguna property. The photograph triumphed over hundreds of entries in this annual competition, showcasing the vibrant local talent in the Newcastle region.

A Story of Survival and Character

The winning image captures a pair of alpacas with a compelling backstory. Mr Wilcox explained that the animals belong to his wife, Daniela, and that the mother and daughter share a lively, sometimes challenging relationship. The mother nearly died after being bitten by a red-bellied black snake during her pregnancy, an event that has shaped the feisty nature of her offspring.

Judges praised the photograph for its rich narrative tension, vibrant colour palette, and subtle humour. They noted how the image conveys a sense of life and personality, making it a standout entry in the competition.

From Beginner to Prize Winner

Remarkably, Mr Wilcox only took up photography a few months before his win. He developed a practice of sitting quietly with the animals on his farm in the early mornings, observing their behaviours to capture their unique characters. "I just sit with them and try to capture their personalities," he said. "I pick a subject and make a study, thinking about how I can present it in a beautiful way."

His dedication has paid off, earning him an $1100 voucher for photography equipment to further his creative journey.

People's Choice Award Goes to Young Talent

In the People's Choice category, 16-year-old Eddie Alston from Mayfield emerged victorious. His thoughtfully composed portrait depicts a rural man gazing intently at a scene just beyond the frame. Voters were drawn to the image's striking tone, soft lighting, and observant composition, which evokes a deep sense of emotion and storytelling.

Eddie will receive a $900 voucher for photography equipment, recognising his promising talent and the community's appreciation for his work.

Celebrating Local Art and Community

The Hunter Photography Prize highlights the thriving artistic community in the Newcastle and Hunter region. It provides a platform for both emerging and established photographers to showcase their work, fostering creativity and connection among locals.

This year's winners exemplify the diversity of subjects and styles that make the competition so engaging, from intimate animal portraits to human-centric narratives. The event continues to inspire photographers of all ages to explore their surroundings and share their perspectives through the lens.
