Motorhead Guitarist Phil Campbell Passes Away at 64 After Intensive Care Struggle

Phil Campbell, the renowned guitarist for the iconic heavy metal band Motorhead, has died at the age of 64. His family confirmed the sad news on social media, stating that he passed away peacefully on Friday night, UK time, after what they described as a long and courageous battle in intensive care.

Family Statement and Legacy

In a heartfelt statement, the family announced: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Philip Anthony Campbell, who passed away peacefully last night following a long and courageous battle in intensive care after a complex, major operation." They highlighted his roles as a devoted husband, wonderful father, and proud grandfather, affectionately known as 'Bampi'. The statement added that he was deeply loved and will be missed immensely, with his legacy, music, and memories living on forever.

Cancelled Tour and Health Priorities

Campbell's band, Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, had been scheduled to tour Australia earlier this month. However, the shows were cancelled late last month due to his declining health. A statement released at the time emphasized that his health was always the top priority, apologizing for any inconvenience to fans.

Tributes from Motorhead and Bandmates

Motorhead paid tribute to Campbell in an Instagram post, describing him as a wonderful guitarist and an enormous beam of light. The band wrote: "Phil was a wonderful guitarist, writer, performer and musician who had Motorhead in his veins. He always led with his gift of guitar, and carried a great sense of humour, but most of all, Phil led with his heart." They noted his love for life and joy, urging fans to send love and positive energy to his family.

Drummer Mikkey Dee, who joined Motorhead in 1992 and stayed until singer Lemmy's death, also shared a tribute. He said: "He was the funniest guy I have ever known and the best rock guitar player I have ever played with. His vibe and feel for rock music were outstanding." Dee expressed his condolences to Campbell's family and reminisced about their time together, including writing 12 studio albums.

Motorhead's History and Campbell's Role

Motorhead was founded in 1975 by bass player and singer Lemmy, whose real name was Ian Kilmister. The group helped pioneer heavy metal music in Britain with a string of top 10 albums, including the 1980 hit Ace Of Spades, 1981's No Sleep Til Hammersmith, and 1982's Ironfist. Campbell joined the band in 1984 and remained until it disbanded in 2015 following Lemmy's death. He was the second-longest serving member after Lemmy and later recorded music and toured with his sons, Todd, Dane, and Tyla, as the group Phil Campbell and The Bastard Sons.

The music world mourns the loss of a talented musician whose contributions to rock and heavy metal will be remembered for generations to come.
