The City of Cockburn is reviving its cherished summer tradition with the return of the annual Cockburn Sun Sets live music event, featuring an impressive headline act that promises to draw crowds from across the region. On February 21, the Success regional sporting facility will be transformed into a vibrant family-friendly zone from 5pm to 10pm, offering a full evening of musical entertainment and engaging activities for all ages.
ARIA Award-Winners Take Center Stage
Leading this year's line-up is the globally recognized alternative rock band Birds of Tokyo, who have earned multiple ARIA awards for their impactful music. The Perth-grown group is celebrated for their catalogue of hits, including fan favourites like ‘Lanterns’ and ‘Good Lord’, which have cemented their status in the Australian music scene.
Despite their international acclaim, the band's guitarist Adam Spark expressed genuine excitement and pride about performing at this local show. He emphasized the importance of community-supported events in today's challenging economic climate.
Supporting Australian Music in Tough Times
"We love funded events like this Cockburn show, as it keeps it affordable for music fans at a time when the cost of living is so high," Spark stated. "In a time when it’s incredibly hard for any local artist to be heard above the noise that is big international marquee artists, it’s pivotal that we rally around and support Australian stories."
Spark encouraged the community to actively support homegrown talent by attending local shows, purchasing merchandise, and streaming Australian artists. "By going to local shows, buying local merch and streaming local artists, we can show ... that we love Aussie music as much or if not more than the superstars," he added, highlighting the band's commitment to fostering local music culture.
Rising Stars Join the Line-Up
This year's event is brimming with emerging talent, set to warm up the audience before Birds of Tokyo takes the stage. Perth local Ricky Neil Jr., a Minang Noongar vocalist who is carving his own unique sound in the Australian music industry, will be among the performers.
"It’s all very up and down, but I love this," Neil Jr. remarked about his musical journey. "There are lots of weird vibes coming through, and it’s exciting. We’re all just trying our best to navigate this whole thing."
He will be joined by a diverse array of artists, including:
- Melbourne singer-songwriter Steph Strings
- Sydney-based funk and soul group Caravana Sun
- ARIA-nominated indie/country singer-songwriter Charlie Collins
Spark praised the support line-up, noting, "It’s looking amazing. It’s going to be a great show."
Community-Focused Entertainment for All Ages
The Cockburn Sun Sets event has quickly become a beloved community favourite, highlighted as a key feature of the city’s 2025-26 live event season. Mayor Logan Howlett underscored the city's dedication to providing accessible cultural experiences.
"Our city has been providing free community concerts for many years, featuring incredible Australian talent, and 2026 is no exception," Howlett said. "Apart from a host of incredible Australian music, expect a huge range of free family activities throughout the event, where everyone is welcome."

Attendees can look forward to a variety of free activities designed to entertain all age groups, such as:
- A sparkle station for creative fun
