Wollongong Set to Crown Australian Pinball Champion in 2026
The Australian Pinball Championship is heading to Wollongong, with the prestigious event scheduled to take place at the Fraternity Club over four days starting Thursday, March 19, 2026. This marks a significant moment for the local gaming community, as competitors from across the nation vie for the title of national champion.
Qualification and Event Details
Event lead Kris Forner explained that qualification for the championship is based on year-long performance. "To even make it to play, you need to perform all year, all of your 2025 results count," he said. The men's division will feature 64 qualifiers from Australia, while the top 25 women will compete in their category, following state championships.
Forner expressed excitement about hosting the event, stating, "To have the privilege of being able to host it, it's very cool and very exciting." While the main competition is reserved for qualified players, the public can participate in side competitions throughout the weekend. Tickets for these side events will be available for purchase online, allowing enthusiasts to join in the fun.
Community and Mental Health Benefits
The Illawarra Pinball Club, which boasts over 20 machines ranging from Batman to Star Trek, plays a central role in the local scene. Forner highlighted the club's impact, noting, "It's just fun, the community that we've been able to build within the Illawarra ... it's nostalgic, and it brings people together." He added that pinball serves as an outlet for many members, contributing to mental well-being and social connections.
Insights from a Champion Competitor
Paul Jones, a Wollongong local and two-time former Australian champion, will be among the competitors. Reflecting on his journey, Jones said, "I grew up with it as a kid. When I was a kid we had them everywhere, corner stores and so forth." After rediscovering pinball through a local tournament, he now owns 20 machines and practices two to three hours daily.
Jones emphasized the unpredictable nature of pinball, stating, "Every game is different, that's the beauty of pinball, it's not like an arcade game where there is patterns. You don't know what you are going to get." He remains confident heading into the championship, adding, "I'm planning to do pretty well, so I'll leave no stone unturned."
Public Engagement and Observational Opportunities
In addition to side competitions, the event will feature an upper area for public observation, with a couple of machines available for casual play. This setup aims to foster community engagement and introduce newcomers to the world of pinball.
The Australian Pinball Championship in Wollongong promises to be a highlight for gaming enthusiasts, combining competitive spirit with community camaraderie. With tickets on sale, fans are encouraged to secure their spots for this exciting event.
