Roblox Age-Verified Accounts Sold Online, Undermining Child Safety Measures
Age-verified Roblox accounts are being offered for sale on various online marketplaces, exposing a terrifying loophole in the gaming platform's new safety initiatives. Roblox, popular with children but notorious for predator issues, recently introduced age-verification tools to protect young users. However, experts argue these technologies are insufficient to address the ongoing risks.
Pre-Made Accounts Bypass Safety Protocols
Listings for pre-made Roblox accounts have emerged online, allowing adults to access child-only gaming spaces for as little as $1.50. These accounts advertise that underage ID verification is already completed, with voice chat and microphone use enabled. One listing seen by 7NEWS.com.au claimed, "You can use from ANY country ... Verified from passport ID ... NO restrictions or bans." This practice directly violates Roblox's terms, which prohibit buying, selling, or trading accounts.
A Roblox spokesperson stated the platform takes action against such violations, but acknowledged limited ability to stop external sales. An eBay spokesperson confirmed removing similar listings, while another unnamed marketplace appeared less effective in addressing the issue.
Queensland Court Case Highlights Grooming Dangers
The sale of these accounts coincides with a chilling court case in Queensland, where an alleged predator faces 596 child abuse-related offences. Police allege the 27-year-old man used Roblox and other platforms to groom victims, primarily aged 7 to 15, before moving communications to encrypted apps. Detectives uncovered over 23,000 videos and images involving 459 victims across multiple jurisdictions.
This case underscores the real-world dangers of online predators exploiting gaming platforms, despite safety measures.
Expert Criticizes Roblox Safety Systems
Niusha Shafiabady, an expert in computational intelligence at Australian Catholic University, describes Roblox's safety measures as creating an "illusion of safety." She emphasizes that even with AI, the platform's systems cannot keep up with the volume of new content and games created daily. Shafiabady notes audits rely heavily on user reports and chat filters are "easy to dodge," making it "totally impossible" to monitor all activity effectively.
Roblox data shows 60% of active daily users completed age checks as of January 31, with 35% under 13, 38% aged 13-17, and 27% over 18. The platform has introduced continuous age checks to monitor user behavior, but Shafiabady warns no AI system is foolproof, as even one mistake could harm a child.
Online Demand for Underage Accounts
Beyond marketplace listings, direct offers for age-verified accounts appear on forums like Reddit. One user sought an account verified for 13-year-olds, offering 30 Robux (about 50 cents), claiming no one their age chats in role-play games. Suspicious responses questioned their intent, highlighting community concerns about malicious actors.
Parental Vigilance Crucial
Roblox provides a one-time reset option for parents to correct age checks via account settings or parental controls. Shafiabady stresses that parental oversight is critical, as technology alone cannot ensure safety. She advises parents to remain vigilant and actively supervise their children's online activities.
As moderators work to remove illicit listings, the persistence of these sales reveals significant gaps in digital child protection, urging a reevaluation of current safety frameworks in gaming environments.
