Newcastle's 11-Metre Christmas Tree Returns to Wheeler Place
Christmas Festivities Return to Newcastle's Wheeler Place

The heart of Newcastle will soon sparkle with festive magic as the city prepares for the return of its beloved Christmas celebrations in Wheeler Place. An impressive 11-metre-tall Christmas tree will be installed on Friday, November 14, marking the beginning of the holiday season in the Civic precinct.

Festive Program Launch and Activities

The official Christmas program kicks off on November 28 with the tree lighting ceremony and the first of three weekends packed with free, family-friendly entertainment. According to Deputy Lord Mayor Charlotte McCabe, this annual celebration has become a highlight of Newcastle's events calendar, drawing visitors into the city centre during the crucial pre-Christmas period.

The festive lineup includes Christmas-themed dancers, live music performances, carol singing, and a Christmas DJ to keep spirits high. Children will delight in visiting the Christmas craft station where they can write letters to Santa and create silver bell ribbon bracelets.

Pet-Friendly Festivities and Photo Opportunities

In a unique twist that celebrates the entire family, pets are welcome to join the festivities. The popular pet 'pawtraits' will return, allowing furry friends to have their moment in the spotlight. The installation will feature twinkling reindeer, oversized bells, and Santa's sleigh, providing numerous colourful photo opportunities for visitors of all ages.

McCabe emphasized that the Christmas program not only celebrates seasonal joy and togetherness but also supports local businesses. "Our Christmas program of activities celebrate the joy and togetherness of the season while shining a light on the amazing local retailers, cafes, and restaurants that make our city so special," she said.

Additional Christmas Performances Across Newcastle

The Wheeler Place celebrations form part of a broader festive program across Newcastle during November and December. Other highlights include:

  • A Very Newy Chrissy - a locally produced play at the Civic Playhouse running from November 6 to 15
  • Newcastle University Choir performing Handel's Messiah at City Hall on December 14
  • The popular One Song Sing community choir event returning to Wheeler Place on December 22
  • Musical production Kinky Boots at the Civic Theatre from December 18 to 21

The City of Newcastle encourages residents and visitors to explore the city's shops and restaurants while enjoying the festive atmosphere, making the most of the holiday season in the heart of the community.
