Promoter Outraged as Headline Act No-Show at Newcastle Dance Festival
The organiser of a major Newcastle dance music event has declared he is "as pissed off" as attendees after the advertised headline performer failed to appear without any prior notification. The incident occurred at The Big '90s Dance Party, held at The Station in Newcastle last Saturday night, where approximately 2000 people had gathered in anticipation.
Unexpected Substitution Sparks Attendee Backlash
Sydney-based electronic DJ Nick Skitz was scheduled to headline the festival but did not arrive for his performance. In response, DJ Peewee Ferris was hastily asked to extend his set to fill the gap. Notably, the audience was not informed during the event that Skitz would not be taking the stage, leading to widespread confusion and frustration among punters.
Following the festival, numerous social media posts emerged from disgruntled attendees expressing their anger and calling for either full or partial refunds. The promoter, Sam Rose of Boo Entertainment, confirmed to the Newcastle Herald that "Nick Skitz dropped the ball" by failing to notify him of his absence. As of Tuesday, Rose reported that Skitz had still not responded to his repeated calls and text messages, and the DJ also did not reply to the Herald's request for comment.
Promoter's Dilemma and Industry Standards
Rose, who has been promoting gigs across Australia for over a decade, including events at Hope Estate in the Hunter Valley, described this as an unprecedented situation in his career. "I've been in the game 11 years and I've never had a headliner not show up," he stated. He added that Skitz had previously been reliable, having been booked multiple times for performances in cities like Perth, Gold Coast, and Melbourne without issue.
Explaining his decision not to announce the no-show to the crowd, Rose said he felt trapped between difficult choices. "I was in between a rock and a hard place," he admitted. "I didn't really want to go and announce it. Because I could have had a riot on my hands here." He emphasised that such occurrences, while rare, are part of the industry, and as long as the show continues, refunds are not typically issued.
Refund Policy and Future Resolutions
Despite the backlash, Rose has ruled out offering partial or full refunds, citing industry standards. However, he acknowledged receiving a handful of complaints and is personally reaching out to affected individuals to discuss potential resolutions. "We'll work something out with those people somehow. I'm not refunding anyone," he clarified, underscoring his commitment to maintaining the event's integrity while addressing attendee concerns.
The promoter reiterated his frustration, noting that he shares the disappointment of the audience. "These things happen. I haven't heard from him and I'm as pissed off as anyone else," Rose concluded, highlighting the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Skitz's unexplained absence.
