Woman charged with attempted murder after Sydney unit fire

A 50-year-old woman has been charged with multiple offences, including attempted murder, after allegedly trying to set fire to a unit while a man was inside. The incident occurred in Canterbury, in Sydney's southwest, on Sunday morning.

Police respond to domestic incident

Officers were called to a unit block on Canterbury Road around 7:40am on Sunday following reports of a domestic incident. Upon arrival, they found that a woman had allegedly attempted to force her way into a man's unit. According to NSW Police, during the attempt, the woman allegedly damaged the door with a tyre jack before setting the front of the unit alight while the man was still inside.

Fire extinguished, no injuries

The blaze was quickly extinguished by emergency services, and the man inside the unit was uninjured. The woman was arrested nearby, and police seized a lighter and a small amount of methamphetamine. She has been charged with five offences, including destroy or damage building by fire with intent to murder. The woman was refused bail and is scheduled to appear at Burwood Local Court on Monday.
