Why Levi's 501 Jeans Remain a Timeless Wardrobe Staple

My denim drawer is officially overflowing, but there is one particular pair I return to whenever I need the perfect everyday fit. Arguably the most iconic and recognisable jean across the world is Levi's 501, a timeless straight-leg pair that has remained a staple throughout the decades. From Hollywood icons to off-duty models and fashion editors alike, everyone seems to be wearing these jeans, including Beyoncé, Kendall Jenner, and Hailey Bieber.

While denim trends continue the cycle of bootcut, skinny, wide-leg, and barrel silhouettes, the classic straight-leg fit remains a go-to each season, working with every other item in our wardrobes. Originally designed as durable workwear in the 1870s, the Levi's 501 has since become one of fashion's most hard-working staples, all thanks to its universally flattering, trend-defying silhouette.

Despite being more than 150 years old, the design of Levi's 501 has received minimal changes over the years, maintaining its classic, straight-leg shape. Tracey Panek, Historian at Levi Strauss & Co., says the original concept came from practicality rather than fashion. "Levi's 501 jean, the world's first modern blue jean or denim riveted pant, began as an innovative idea to fill a practical need," she tells 7You. "In the early 1870s, Nevada Tailor Jacob Davis was stitching up a pair of work pants for a customer when he hit on the idea of adding tiny metal pieces to the pockets. His 'riveted' trousers soon became a hit, and he could not keep up with the demand. Writing to his fabric supplier, Levi Strauss & Co., Davis proposed that they partner on a patent." The patent number was officially granted, establishing May 20 as '501 Day'. Today, the 501 comes in a range of fits and finishes, including the popular '90s silhouette, a favorite among A-listers.

Jill Guenza, Global VP of Women's Design at Levi Strauss & Co., says the style has become especially popular for those wanting a roomier fit through the hips and thighs. "The essential mid-rise 501 with tons of attitude. It has more ease in the hips and thighs relative to the 501 Original and a relaxed straight leg, reminiscent of our favorite 501s from the 1990s. We've heard from our fans that people with curvier silhouettes love this style for its ease through the hips and thighs relative to the waist." This trend-defying shape features a classic straight leg, regular fit, signature button fly, and iconic leather patch on the back of the jean. Levi's 501s remain a wardrobe staple for women across the country. The sought-after '90s style retails for $159.95, and is available across two different denim washes, both loved and highly-rated. "90s 501s what's not to love! Mid rise, straight leg! They look great with so many different shoes, I absolutely love this style and will be buying other colours," writes one shopper. "This is the perfect classic jean. The fit is true to size. The length was perfect. I am 5'2 and ordered a size 25," another adds. A third comments: "I love these jeans! They fit like a glove and remind me of the jeans style I actually wore in the 90s. They are very flattering and I get compliments on them." Missing Levi's 501 in your denim drawer? It is not too late to add a pair.
