Two teenage boys have been charged and a man remains in hospital after he was allegedly knocked unconscious during an assault on a public bus at Belmont on Saturday.
Incident Details
Police reported that emergency services were called to the Pacific Highway just after midday following reports of an assault on a bus. Lake Macquarie police and officers from the Police Transport Command were informed that a group of young people boarded the bus before an altercation began with a 49-year-old male passenger.
As the group was disembarking, they allegedly repeatedly assaulted the man, striking him in a manner that rendered him unconscious. The victim sustained head and facial injuries and was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being transported to John Hunter Hospital for further medical care.
Police Investigation
Shortly after the incident, police apprehended nine teenagers at a fast-food restaurant located in Belmont. Following a thorough investigation, seven of the youths were released without charges, pending further inquiries.
Two boys, aged 13 and 15, were taken to Belmont Police Station, where they were formally charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company. The pair were refused bail and are scheduled to appear before a children's court on Sunday.
Ongoing Probe
Police have confirmed that investigations into the incident are continuing. Authorities are appealing for any witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage to come forward and assist with the inquiry.
The 49-year-old victim remains in hospital in a stable condition, receiving treatment for his injuries.
