Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney has declared that baring her body is a deeply personal choice and a powerful method of reclaiming control over her own narrative. The acclaimed actress generated significant attention during the recent promotional tour for her latest film, The Housemaid, by appearing in a succession of bold and revealing ensembles that rapidly ignited widespread online discussion.
A Statement Through Style and Business
The 28-year-old performer has not allowed the ensuing commentary to hinder the launch of her new intimate apparel venture, SYRN. In a striking move, Sweeney personally modelled the lingerie to promote her collection, embodying the brand's ethos directly. "This can be how I communicate to my audience," Sweeney explained in an interview with Cosmopolitan. "I want to show women that we can take back our power and fully free ourselves."
She fully anticipated that the campaign imagery would provoke questions about her underlying motivations. "People will say 'Oh, she's doing this for a guy'," Sweeney noted. "Or 'Oh, she's a guy's girl'." However, she firmly insists that SYRN is fundamentally centred on empowerment and granting women agency over their own physicality. "I want it to be their choice — the choice of the wearer — whether this is for them, for somebody else, or for a camera lens," she emphasised.
Navigating Public Scrutiny and False Narratives
Sweeney also reflected on how her upbringing in the public eye has influenced the pervasive discourse surrounding her body, acknowledging the emotional toll exacted by persistent scrutiny. Addressing persistent rumours about cosmetic enhancements, she stated clearly, "I've never gotten any work done." She expressed a wish for more accountability on social media platforms, saying, "I wish there was something in place on social media to restrict things that aren't true. Because there are girls who will look at me and say, 'I need to do these things to feel pretty'. It makes me sad."
For Sweeney, the intense focus on her appearance and what she describes as being "hyper-sexualised" served as a primary catalyst for creating SYRN. "This is me reclaiming my body and my narrative and using it to empower other women," she affirmed.
Unwanted Entanglements in Political Debates
Beyond her sartorial choices, Sydney Sweeney has found herself unwillingly pulled into broader political and cultural controversies. Last year, her advertising campaign for American Eagle jeans faced intense criticism and was scrutinised over perceived connotations linked to white supremacy.
More recently, she has been labelled the "MAGA Barbie" following widespread speculation about her political beliefs, particularly after reports surfaced claiming she was registered as a Republican. The actress has consistently declined to comment on her political affiliations and reaffirmed that position in her Cosmopolitan discussion.
"I've never been here to talk about politics," Sweeney stated. "I've always been here to make art, so this is just not a conversation I want to be at the forefront of. And I think because of that, people want to take it even further and use me as their own pawn. But it's somebody else assigning something to me, and I can't control that."
When questioned about why she does not publicly clarify the speculation surrounding her views, the star of Christy added, "I haven't figured it out. I'm not a hateful person."
