In a deeply emotional and public appeal, prominent US television host Savannah Guthrie has directly addressed the individuals allegedly responsible for her mother's disappearance. The NBC Today show anchor posted a heartfelt video to Instagram on Thursday afternoon Australian Eastern Standard Time, reading from a prepared statement while flanked by her siblings, sister Annie and brother Camron.
A Family's Desperate Call for Communication
The Guthrie family acknowledged they are aware of disturbing reports concerning a ransom letter that was sent to at least two major media outlets. However, Savannah emphasised a critical and urgent precondition for any dialogue. The family requires undeniable proof that their mother, Nancy Guthrie, is still alive and in the captors' custody.
"We live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated," Savannah stated solemnly in the video. "We need to know, without a doubt, that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen. Please reach out to us."
Ransom Demands and Official Investigation
This plea follows the revelation that a ransom note was sent to the celebrity news outlet TMZ on Wednesday, demanding a substantial sum of money to be paid in the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has confirmed that his department has received more than one such ransom note.
While Sheriff Nanos did not specify if it was identical to the TMZ note, he confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has shared a ransom note with Savannah Guthrie herself. This indicates an active and coordinated multi-agency effort to resolve the case.
Public Gratitude and a Portrait of Nancy
During the video message, Savannah also took a moment to express profound gratitude to the public for their overwhelming support. "We feel them and we continue to believe that she feels them too," she said of the prayers offered for her "beloved mum."
She painted a vivid and loving portrait of the missing woman, describing Nancy Guthrie as a "kind, faithful, loyal, fiercely loving woman of goodness and light" who is also "funny, spunky and clever." Savannah highlighted her mother's role as an adored grandmother and a devoted friend, full of kindness and a love for fun and adventure.
Concerns Over Fragile Health
The television host underscored a grave medical concern, revealing that her mother's health is fragile. "She lives in constant pain. She is without any medicine. She needs it to survive and she needs it not to suffer," Savannah explained, adding a layer of urgency to the family's appeal.
In the video's poignant closing moments, Savannah spoke directly to her mother: "Mummy, if you are hearing this, you are a strong woman, you are God's precious daughter Nancy." Authorities have stated they believe Nancy is still alive at this time.
Timeline of Disappearance and Ongoing Speculation
Nancy Guthrie was last seen alive on Saturday, US time, and was reported missing by family members the following day after she failed to attend a church service. Despite rampant online speculation, the sheriff's department has been clear in stating there is currently no identified suspect or person of interest.
This includes publicly addressing claims that her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, might be involved. "We have not identified a suspect or person of interest in this case. Detectives continue to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Mrs Guthrie. We are also awaiting additional forensic results," the department told TMZ in an official statement.
Cioni became a focal point for public conjecture after police conducted a search of his vehicle. Adding to the mystery, two senior officials briefed on the investigation informed NBC News that authorities are examining what appears to be blood found outside Nancy Guthrie's home. Furthermore, investigators noted that Nancy's pacemaker seems to have disconnected from its remote monitoring application early on Sunday.
