Dramatic new vision has emerged showing Queensland police dog Elvis chasing down and apprehending two alleged thieves in Cairns. The footage, released by police, captures the intense moments as the canine officer tracks the suspects through suburban streets.
Incident Details
The pursuit began after police responded to reports of a break-in at a local business in the early hours of the morning. Officers arrived to find two men fleeing the scene on foot. Police dog Elvis, a German Shepherd, was deployed to track the suspects.
Body-worn camera footage shows Elvis running at high speed through backyards and over fences, following the scent of the alleged offenders. The dog eventually cornered one suspect in a backyard, where the man surrendered without resistance. The second suspect was located a short time later hiding under a vehicle.
Arrests Made
Both men, aged 22 and 24, were taken into custody and charged with break-in and stealing offences. They are scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court later this month.
Senior Sergeant Mark Freeman praised the work of police dog Elvis and his handler, saying the quick response and tracking ability of the dog were instrumental in the arrests.
"Police dogs are an invaluable asset to our team, and this incident shows just how effective they can be in apprehending offenders," Senior Sergeant Freeman said.
The vision has been widely shared on social media, with many praising the skills of the police dog. This is not the first time Elvis has been in the spotlight; the canine officer has been involved in several high-profile captures in the Cairns region.
Community Response
Local residents have expressed relief that the alleged thieves were caught quickly. "It's great to see our police and their dogs doing such a good job," one resident said. "It makes you feel safer knowing they are out there."
Police have reminded the public to report any suspicious activity and to ensure their properties are secure.
