Perth teenager Austin Appelbee has secured the endorsement of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for the prestigious Irish President's Award. The award recognises outstanding contributions to community service and leadership among young people of Irish descent.
A remarkable achievement
Appelbee, 18, from Perth's northern suburbs, has been nominated for the award due to his extensive volunteer work and leadership roles. He has dedicated countless hours to community projects, including mentoring younger students and organising charity events.
Prime Minister's support
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wrote a letter of support for Appelbee's nomination, praising his dedication and impact. "Austin exemplifies the best of our youth, showing compassion and initiative that inspire others," Albanese said in the letter.
Appelbee expressed gratitude for the endorsement, stating it was an honour to receive recognition from the nation's leader. "I am humbled and grateful for the Prime Minister's support. This award is not just about me, but about the many volunteers who make a difference every day," he said.
The Irish President's Award
The Irish President's Award, also known as Gaisce, is a prestigious award in Ireland that challenges young people to set and achieve personal goals in community involvement, personal skills, physical activity, and teamwork. Appelbee is one of a select few Australians to be considered for the honour.
Community impact
Appelbee's volunteer work includes organising food drives for the homeless, tutoring primary school students, and assisting at local aged care facilities. His efforts have not only benefited the community but also inspired his peers to get involved.
His mother, Sarah Appelbee, said she was incredibly proud of her son's achievements. "Austin has always been driven to help others. Seeing him recognised on such a scale is overwhelming," she said.
The award ceremony is expected to take place in Dublin later this year, with Appelbee hoping to attend if successful.
