A young man has tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle while refueling his car on a major Perth freeway. The 22-year-old was standing beside his utility vehicle on the northbound lanes of the Mitchell Freeway, between Hepburn and Whitfords avenues in Padbury, when he was allegedly hit in what authorities are treating as a hit-and-run incident.
Emergency Response and Charges
Emergency services rushed to the scene at approximately 7:20 pm on Sunday, but despite their efforts, the man could not be saved. Police have alleged that 30-year-old Michael Kane was driving the vehicle involved and that he fled the scene before later surrendering to authorities. Kane, a resident of Iluka, appeared in Joondalup Magistrates Court charged with failing to stop and assist, as well as failing to report the incident to police.
Investigation and Freeway Closure
Major crash investigators spent more than 13 hours piecing together the events after closing a section of the freeway. The prolonged closure allowed for a thorough examination of the scene, highlighting the severity of the incident.
Safety Reminder from Authorities
In the wake of the devastating crash, authorities have issued a stark reminder to motorists about the dangers of exiting their vehicles on freeways. Officials advise that if you break down, you should remain inside your vehicle with your seatbelt fastened and hazard lights activated. Motorists can also contact Main Roads for assistance in moving their car to a safer location.
Rising Road Toll in Western Australia
This death marks the fifth fatality on Western Australian roads in just three days, prompting concern from state officials. WA Labor Minister Simone McGurk expressed her sorrow, stating, "The fatality rate is both worrying and heartbreaking. I cannot imagine what those families are going through, and my thoughts are with them."
The accused has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again in July. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
