Patrick Dempsey Shares Rare Update on Eric Dane's ALS Battle
Patrick Dempsey on Eric Dane's ALS Fight

Patrick Dempsey has provided a rare and heartfelt update on the health condition of his former Grey's Anatomy co-star Eric Dane, who continues to face a challenging battle with terminal ALS.

A Courageous Fight Against a Devastating Disease

In a recent interview with Parade magazine, Dempsey opened up about Dane's ongoing struggle, describing it as an incredibly difficult situation. "It's very hard for him, but I do try to stay in touch and see how he's doing," Dempsey shared. He went on to praise Dane's resilience, stating, "I think he's been incredibly courageous in the face of this horrible disease."

The Diagnosis and Its Impact

Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan on the long-running medical drama, publicly announced his ALS diagnosis in April. ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is the most common form of motor neurone disease. This progressive neurological condition gradually impairs a person's ability to move, speak, eat, and breathe. While certain treatments can help slow the progression of the disease, there is currently no known cure.

Despite the severity of his diagnosis, the 53-year-old actor has chosen to speak openly about his condition. Recent reports from his ex-partner have revealed that Dane now requires around-the-clock nursing care and uses a wheelchair for mobility.

Professional Challenges and Personal Strength

Dempsey, who portrayed Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd opposite Dane's character from 2006 to 2012, disclosed that Dane's health condition has affected their professional collaborations. The actors had hoped to reunite for Dempsey's new crime series, Memory of a Killer, but the progression of Dane's disease made this impossible.

"I spoke to him a few weeks ago. I've been texting with him," Dempsey explained. "We were trying to get him in [Memory of a Killer] but unfortunately, the progression of his disease made it virtually impossible."

Continuing Work and Positive Outlook

Despite these challenges, Dempsey noted that Dane remains active in his career, recently working in Toronto on what Dempsey believes is another medical drama. Dane recently guest-starred as a 9/11 hero firefighter diagnosed with ALS in an episode of the television show Brilliant Minds.

Dempsey emphasized Dane's positive attitude throughout his health battle, describing him as a "wonderful human being" with a great sense of humor and intelligence. "I've always enjoyed working and being around Eric," Dempsey added.

A Heartbreaking Reality with a Silver Lining

The Grey's Anatomy star expressed deep sympathy for his former colleague's situation. "It's heartbreaking. It really is. For him and for his family," Dempsey said. "You feel for them when you see this terrible disease and how quickly it attacks the body."

However, Dempsey also highlighted how Dane is using his experience to make a positive impact. "But he's bringing a lot of light to that, and he's using his platform in a positive way. I wish him the best," he concluded, acknowledging Dane's efforts to raise awareness about ALS through his public platform.
