A mother has appeared before a court in Queensland, accused of murdering her young daughter at their family home. Police were called to the residence in Lowood, approximately 80 kilometres west of Brisbane, around 11:10 pm on Monday night, where they discovered a four-year-old girl unresponsive.
Despite the efforts of paramedics who rushed to the scene, the young girl was tragically declared dead at the location. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death, with detectives exploring the possibility that the child was deliberately drowned. However, they are awaiting the results of an autopsy to confirm the exact cause of death.
The child’s mother, a 31-year-old registered nurse, was arrested on Tuesday and formally charged with one count of murder involving domestic violence against a child. During her first appearance at the Ipswich Magistrates Court later that day, she did not apply for bail. The case has been adjourned until next month, and she has been remanded in custody pending further proceedings.
Police have confirmed that two other children were present inside the home at the time of the incident but were not physically harmed. It has also been reported that the state’s Child Safety Department had previously received reports concerning the family, though details of those reports have not been disclosed.
Detective Inspector Michael Manago expressed his condolences to the family, stating, “This is an incredibly tragic situation. We understand this incident has shocked the local community.” He added that a post-mortem examination will help establish greater clarity around how the child died.
Forensic investigators have been seen at the property since Monday night, as the investigation into the alleged incident remains ongoing. Police are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist with their inquiries.
