Family Thanks Paramedics After Dramatic Home Birth

A Geelong family has expressed their heartfelt gratitude to paramedics and an emergency call handler after a dramatic home birth that saw a mother deliver her baby with guidance over the phone.

The Unexpected Arrival

When Geelong local Sarah Thompson went into labour unexpectedly at home, she and her partner Mark knew they needed help fast. With no time to reach the hospital, Sarah’s contractions intensified rapidly, and Mark dialled triple-zero in a panic. The call was answered by an experienced emergency call handler who calmly guided the couple through the delivery process.

Within minutes, paramedics arrived to find Sarah holding her newborn son, who had been delivered safely with the handler’s instructions. The baby, named Jack, weighed a healthy 3.5 kilograms and was breathing well, much to the relief of everyone involved.

Paramedics Praise the Call Handler

Ambulance Victoria paramedic Emma Richards praised the call handler’s quick thinking and the parents’ composure under pressure. “It was a textbook delivery under challenging circumstances,” Richards said. “The call handler did an incredible job keeping the parents calm and providing clear instructions. By the time we arrived, mum and bub were stable and doing wonderfully.”

Family’s Gratitude

In a statement released by the family, Sarah and Mark thanked the emergency services team for their professionalism and care. “We are so grateful to the call handler who stayed on the phone with us and to the paramedics who arrived so quickly,” they said. “Without them, this could have been a very different story. Jack is healthy and happy, and we owe it all to their expertise.”

The family has since been discharged from hospital, where both mother and baby were checked and found to be in excellent health. They are now settling in at home, with Jack already proving to be a content and sleepy newborn.

Emergency Services Advice

Ambulance Victoria reminds the community that in any emergency, it is crucial to call triple-zero immediately. Call handlers are trained to provide life-saving instructions for a range of situations, including childbirth. “We encourage anyone facing an emergency to stay on the line and follow the instructions given,” a spokesperson said. “Our team is here to help 24/7.”

The dramatic home birth has highlighted the vital role of emergency call handlers and paramedics in the Geelong community. The family’s story serves as a testament to the importance of remaining calm and trusting the guidance of professionals during emergencies.
