Ex-Home and Away star Alea O’Shea reveals brain cancer diagnosis

Former Home and Away star Alea O’Shea has shared a heartbreaking personal update, revealing to her followers that she has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

From Uneven Smile to Diagnosis: A Shocking Journey

The actor, best known for playing Darcy Callahan in 57 episodes of the iconic Australian soap between 2011 and 2017, explained her path to diagnosis began with subtle signs. O’Shea first noticed her smile had become slightly uneven and that speaking was becoming a struggle. She also experienced some migraines but initially was not overly concerned.

The situation escalated during a recent trip to Los Angeles, when she lost feeling in two fingers. The numbness then spread to her wrist and toe. Believing it was a pinched nerve, she visited a physiotherapist who immediately suspected something more serious and urged her to get a brain scan. O’Shea has stated she is profoundly grateful for that critical referral.

Life in Limbo and Facing Treatment

O’Shea underwent her first biopsy on her birthday in November and described the waiting period for results as being in "limbo." In a candid video posted to Instagram, where she has over 161,000 followers, she said while speaking about her diagnosis feels "crazy," she is committed to being open and honest.

"I want to live my life as normally as possible while I’m fighting this," O’Shea said. For now, she retains the ability to walk and lift her arm, but has lost function like pointing and gripping with her affected hand.

With characteristic humour, she noted one silver lining: the tumour's location means it will not affect her personality. "So I’m still going to be as hilarious," she laughed. The road ahead, however, is uncertain, with treatment likely to cause hair loss and potential paralysis on her left side.

A Message of Self-Advocacy and Resilience

Using her platform for a vital public message, O’Shea is encouraging everyone to listen to their bodies and seek answers. "When something feels off, even slightly, pay attention to it and find the right professionals who will take you seriously," she urged.

Despite the challenges, O’Shea expressed feeling "genuinely so blessed" to have a strong support network, her independence, and the ability to continue doing what she loves. She plans to keep creating content and connecting with fans authentically throughout her health battle.

"I might be doing videos one-handed, I might disappear when I need to, but mostly I’m going to be showing up as me, every single day that I can," she affirmed. O’Shea concluded by stating she does not want her health issues to define her, but rather to be just another part of her ongoing story.
