The North Queensland Cowboys have joined a campaign to provide safe phones to survivors of domestic violence in Townsville. The initiative, led by local charity Safe Phones for Survivors, aims to distribute mobile phones that have been stripped of tracking capabilities and pre-loaded with support resources.
Partnership Details
The Cowboys, through their community arm, have pledged to help fundraise and raise awareness for the cause. Club captain Chad Townsend said the team was proud to support such a vital service. "Domestic violence is an issue that affects too many in our community, and if we can help provide a lifeline to those in need, we will," he said.
How Safe Phones Work
Safe phones are refurbished devices that have been wiped clean of any previous data and software that could be used to track the user. They come pre-installed with apps for emergency contacts, legal aid, and counseling services. Each phone also has a direct line to local shelters and police.
- Phones are provided free of charge to survivors referred by partner organizations.
- Donations and corporate sponsorships fund the program.
- The Cowboys will host fundraising events at home games.
Impact on Survivors
Safe Phones for Survivors founder Sarah Mitchell said the devices gave victims a sense of security and independence. "Many survivors have their phones monitored or confiscated by abusers. Having a safe phone can be the difference between staying in a dangerous situation or getting help," she said.
The charity has already distributed over 500 phones in the past year, with plans to expand the program across Queensland with the Cowboys' support.
Community Response
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill praised the partnership, noting that domestic violence rates in the region are among the highest in the state. "This is a practical, life-saving initiative. I encourage everyone to get behind it," she said.
The Cowboys will also encourage fans to donate old phones at collection points during matches. All donated devices will be professionally wiped and reprogrammed before distribution.
