Colac Burglar Brett Trigg Jailed for Major Thefts

A Colac man has been sentenced to four years in prison for a spree of burglaries that netted more than $100,000 in cash, jewellery, and vehicles. Brett Trigg, 45, appeared in the Geelong County Court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to 12 charges, including burglary, theft, and handling stolen goods.

Details of the Crimes

Trigg's criminal activities took place between January and September 2023, targeting homes and businesses in the Colac region. Among the stolen items were a 2015 Ford Ranger, a 2016 Toyota Kluger, and a 2017 Holden Colorado. He also took cash, power tools, and jewellery from residential properties.

One of the most significant thefts occurred in August 2023, when Trigg broke into a home while the occupants were asleep, making off with a safe containing $50,000 in cash and a Rolex watch worth $20,000.

Police Investigation

Police launched an investigation after a series of break-ins were reported across Colac. Detectives used CCTV footage and forensic evidence to link Trigg to the crimes. He was arrested in September 2023 and has been in custody since.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Geoffrey Chettle said Trigg's crimes were "serious and sophisticated," noting that he had targeted vulnerable victims. "You have caused significant financial and emotional harm to your victims," Judge Chettle said.

Sentence and Impact

Trigg was sentenced to four years in prison, with a non-parole period of two years and six months. He was also ordered to pay restitution to the victims. The court heard that Trigg had a long history of drug addiction and had committed the crimes to fund his habit.

Outside the court, Detective Senior Constable Jane Smith said the sentence sends a strong message to other would-be offenders. "We will continue to target those who think they can profit from the misery of others," she said.

The victims of the burglaries expressed relief at the outcome. One victim, who asked not to be named, said the theft of a family heirloom necklace had been particularly devastating. "We are glad this chapter is over," she said.

Community Response

Local residents have welcomed the jail term, with many expressing hope that it will deter future crime in the area. Colac Neighbourhood Watch coordinator Robert Brown said the community had been on edge during the spree. "This sentence gives us some peace of mind," he said.

Trigg will be eligible for parole in March 2026.
