Cairns police are appealing for public assistance to identify a cyclist following an alleged indecent assault on a woman in the city's north. The incident occurred on a shared path near the Cairns Esplanade on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at approximately 3:30 PM.

Incident Details

According to police, a 32-year-old woman was walking along the shared path when a male cyclist approached her from behind. The man allegedly touched the woman inappropriately before riding away. The woman was not physically injured but was left distressed by the encounter.

Description of Suspect

The suspect is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his 30s to 40s, with a slim build and short brown hair. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a dark-colored cycling jersey, black shorts, and a black helmet. The bicycle is described as a dark-colored mountain bike.

Police have released a description of the cyclist and are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about the man's identity to come forward. Detective Senior Constable Mark Jones of the Cairns Child Protection and Investigation Unit said, "This was a brazen act that has left the victim shaken. We are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the cyclist in the area around that time."

Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby businesses and public spaces. They are also asking cyclists who were in the area to check their helmet cameras for any footage that may assist the investigation.
