A British tourist has admitted to assaulting a teenage boy with a pool cue in a Townsville pub, with the case now before the courts. The incident, which occurred at a local establishment, has drawn attention due to the unprovoked nature of the attack.
Court Appearance
The 24-year-old man appeared in the Townsville Magistrates Court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm. The court heard that the tourist struck the 17-year-old victim with a pool cue during an altercation at the pub on July 15.
Details of the Incident
According to police, the victim was sitting at a table when the tourist approached him without warning and hit him in the face with the pool cue. The teenager suffered a fractured nose and bruising. Witnesses described the attack as sudden and unprovoked.
The tourist, who had been in Australia on a working holiday visa, was arrested shortly after the incident. He has been in custody since his arrest and was remanded for sentencing at a later date.
Victim Impact
The victim's mother told the court that her son has been left traumatized by the assault and has required ongoing medical treatment. She expressed relief that the offender had pleaded guilty, sparing her son the stress of a trial.
Legal Proceedings
Defence lawyer argued that the tourist had been drinking heavily and had no prior criminal record. He said his client was deeply remorseful and had written a letter of apology to the victim. Magistrate Jane Bentley noted the seriousness of the offence but adjourned sentencing for a pre-sentence report.
The tourist remains in custody until his next court appearance, scheduled for October 10. He faces a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment for the assault charge.
The case has sparked discussion about alcohol-fuelled violence and the safety of young people in entertainment venues. Local community leaders have called for stricter penalties for such assaults.
