A previously dull concrete underpass in Maddington has been transformed into a vibrant community landmark, thanks to a new river-themed mural created by local Ballardong Noongar artist Rohin Kickett.
Artwork Brings Personal Connection to Life
The mural, which now covers the walls of the pedestrian underpass beneath Burslem Drive, was officially completed in early December 2025. For artist Rohin Kickett, this project holds deep personal significance. This marks his first public artwork commissioned by the City of Gosnells.
"The mural represents the river in that section of Burslem Drive, leading up to the shopping centre, where I grew up and where I played as a kid," Kickett explained. He expressed hope that the artwork would inject vibrancy into the space and spark curiosity among pedestrians, encouraging them to pause and appreciate the details.
A Collaborative Community Project
The creation of the mural was a collaborative effort, with funding provided by the City of Gosnells, the Water Corporation, and Maddington Central. This partnership highlights a shared commitment to enhancing public spaces and supporting local artistic talent.
Mayor Terresa Lynes emphasised the dual purpose of the project. She noted that while the underpass already provided a safer alternative to crossing the busy Burslem Drive, its stark environment was not inviting. "This bright mural will create a more inviting walkway, connecting the commercial area of Maddington with the river side of Burslem Drive," Mayor Lynes stated.
More Than Just Paint: Safety, Heritage, and Belonging
The project's impact extends beyond mere aesthetics. According to Mayor Lynes, the artwork actively connects pedestrians to the local heritage and landscape, fostering a stronger sense of place and belonging for the community. She praised Kickett's work, stating, "Rohin’s done a great job and it looks fantastic."
The initiative successfully turns a functional piece of infrastructure into a point of community pride and cultural reflection. It demonstrates how public art can improve safety perceptions, celebrate local identity, and create more engaging urban environments for everyone.
