A vibrant new community arts initiative is set to transform the City of Vincent library, turning its lounge area into a dedicated gallery space for local emerging and under-represented artists.
Launching with a Story of Resilience
The inaugural exhibition for the newly minted Library Lounge Gallery will feature the work of local artist and storyteller, Brad Martin. His show, titled Art by Brad, will be officially launched at a special opening night this week.
Martin's artistic journey is one defined by resilience and creativity. He paints weekly with his art mentor, Yvonne, using art as a powerful tool for connection and personal fulfilment while living with complex physical and cognitive disabilities.
Bringing Joy Through 'Grumpy Bugs'
Central to Martin's exhibition is his signature Grumpy Bug series, which forms the heart of his creative practice. These whimsical bug characters are designed to express relatable emotions in a light-hearted and accessible way, aiming to spread joy to everyone who visits the gallery.
Mayor Alison Xamon said the new exhibition program is designed to create a supportive environment where artists at any stage of their career can build meaningful connections with the community.
"This innovative new program will strengthen Vincent's vibrant arts scene and create opportunities for people to connect through creativity," Mayor Xamon stated. "It is programs like this that make Vincent an awesome place to live."
A Free Community Celebration
The community is invited to celebrate the launch of this exciting new cultural space. The opening event for Art by Brad is completely free and requires no prior bookings.
The launch begins at 6pm on Thursday, December 4, at the City of Vincent library. This initiative marks a significant addition to Perth's local arts landscape, providing a crucial platform for artists who might otherwise struggle to find exhibition opportunities.
