Geelong Principals Retire: Barwon Valley & Oberon High Say Farewell
Two Geelong school principals retire after decades of service

The Geelong education community is bidding farewell to two of its most respected leaders, with principals from Barwon Valley School and Oberon High School retiring after decades of dedicated service.

End of an Era for Two Esteemed Leaders

John Munro, the principal of Barwon Valley School in Highton, has stepped down after an impressive 44-year career in education. His final day was Friday, March 22. Meanwhile, Tim McMahon will conclude his tenure as principal of Oberon High School in Belmont at the end of Term 2 this year, marking the close of a significant chapter for the school.

Both men are celebrated not just for their longevity, but for the profound impact they have had on their respective school communities, students, and staff. Their departures signal a major shift in leadership within the region's educational landscape.

John Munro's Four-Decade Legacy

John Munro's career is a testament to commitment. He spent 26 of his 44 years as a principal, with the last 15 years dedicated to leading Barwon Valley School. Reflecting on his decision, Munro cited a desire to spend more time with family and pursue personal interests as key factors.

"I've been thinking about it for a while," Munro said. "Forty-four years is a long time and I just felt it was the right time for me to finish up." He expressed immense pride in the school's culture and the strong team he leaves behind, emphasising that the school's future remains bright.

The Department of Education has already begun the process to find his permanent replacement. In the interim, assistant principal Michelle Wilson will serve as acting principal, ensuring a smooth transition for the school community.

Tim McMahon's Transformative Leadership at Oberon High

At Oberon High School, principal Tim McMahon will finish up at the end of Term 2, 2024. McMahon has led the school for eight years, a period marked by significant growth and development.

He described his time at Oberon as "the highlight of my career," praising the school's incredible staff, supportive parents, and wonderful students. McMahon is particularly proud of the school's improved academic outcomes, the development of a positive and inclusive culture, and the strengthening of community partnerships during his leadership.

"The time is right for a new leader to take Oberon High into the future," McMahon stated, indicating he looks forward to new challenges and opportunities beyond his role as principal.

Looking to the Future of Geelong Schools

The simultaneous retirement of two such experienced principals creates a notable void in Geelong's educational leadership. The Department of Education now faces the important task of appointing successors who can build upon the strong foundations laid by Munro and McMahon.

For the school communities at Barwon Valley and Oberon High, the coming months will be a period of adjustment. However, the stable interim arrangements and the enduring systems put in place by both departing principals are designed to provide continuity.

The legacy of both John Munro and Tim McMahon is one of unwavering dedication. Their careers have shaped thousands of young lives in the Geelong region, and their contributions to public education will be felt for many years to come.
