The mother of a Queensland teenager who died suddenly just days before his high school graduation has publicly thanked her local community for an overwhelming wave of support.
A Life Cut Short
Joshua Kai Belden, an 18-year-old student from Wellington Point State High School, was found unresponsive on November 18 in Brisbane's east. The incident occurred shortly before his Year 12 graduation ceremony was scheduled to take place. Queensland Police have described the death as non-suspicious and sudden, with a report being prepared for the coroner.
His mother, Allison Cox, confirmed the tragic news in a local community group, responding to residents' enquiries. "We have been fielding a lot of enquiries from our community that knew our son Josh regarding his tragic passing," she wrote. "Josh had lived all his life here and had just graduated Year 12." She expressed gratitude on behalf of his loving family.
Community and School in Mourning
Cox shared details of a funeral service, inviting the community to celebrate Joshua's life at the Redlands Christian Reformed Church on December 15. Attendees were encouraged to wear colour and bring their happiness and memories of him.
The school's principal, Deanne Wallwork, notified parents and caregivers the day after the incident, calling it a distressing event. In a letter, she urged guardians to monitor their children's social media use, asking them to discourage sharing or speculating online to protect the privacy of the grieving family and friends.
The Year 12 graduation ceremony, held four days after Joshua's death, proceeded with sensitivity. During the event, Belden was honoured on screen while two of his classmates held a certificate in his place, a moment that moved staff to tears.
An Outpouring of Love and Support
Tributes have flooded in online, painting a picture of a beloved young man. A GoFundMe page established to support the family described Joshua as "a cherished son, a loving brother, grandson, nephew, friend, and classmate" whose warmth touched everyone.
One student recalled how Joshua was looked up to by juniors and seniors alike, known for his contagious smile and habit of waving or smiling at everyone who passed by. "He always managed to make so many smile," the student wrote.
The Queensland Department of Education confirmed that support services, including guidance officers and youth workers, are available at the school for students, staff, and families for as long as needed. The department extended its deepest condolences to all affected by the tragedy.
