A Tasmanian community, still healing from a devastating school tragedy, has been plunged into fresh grief. A teenager who miraculously survived the 2021 Hillcrest Primary School jumping castle disaster has died following an e-bike crash on New Year's Eve.
A Tragic New Year's Eve Collision
Fifteen-year-old Lucas Reid lost his life on December 31 after the electric bike he was riding collided with a telephone pole. The incident occurred around 7:30 pm on Dons Head Road, a rural stretch on the outskirts of Devonport in northwest Tasmania.
Despite the immediate efforts of a nearby resident who rushed to help, Lucas could not be saved and died at the scene. Tasmania Police have confirmed the crash and stated that their investigation into the precise circumstances is ongoing.
From Hillcrest Survival to a Long Recovery
Lucas Reid was one of the children caught in the horrific Hillcrest Primary School incident on December 16, 2021. During an end-of-year celebration, a powerful gust of wind – later described in court as a "mini tornado" – lifted a jumping castle 10 metres into the air.
The disaster claimed the lives of six children: Chace Harrison, Jalailah Jayne-Maree Jones, Zane Mellor, Addison Stewart, Jye Sheehan, and Peter Dodt. Lucas suffered serious injuries in the same event.
His journey to health was long and challenging. He spent weeks in hospital and required the use of a wheelchair during his recovery. His resilience and remarkable progress had become a profound source of hope and inspiration for his family and the wider Devonport community.
