Greenwood College Celebrates 50th Year with New $18.4 Million Sports Hall and Facilities
Greenwood College Opens New Sports Hall in $18.4M Upgrade

Students returning to Greenwood College for the 2026 school year have been welcomed by a brand-new sports hall, which was officially opened this week. The modern facility marks a significant milestone for the public co-educational school, which is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary since opening as Greenwood High School in 1975.

State Government Invests $18.4 Million in School Upgrades

The new sports hall is a central component of a broader $18.4 million state government investment in Greenwood College. This substantial funding has enabled a comprehensive transformation of the school's facilities, providing contemporary learning environments across multiple disciplines.

Features of the New Sports Hall

The newly opened gymnasium is a state-of-the-art facility designed to enhance the physical education and sporting programs at the college. It includes:

  • Indoor courts for various sports activities
  • Modern changerooms and amenities for students
  • Ample storage space for equipment
  • A dedicated staff studies area

Education Minister Sabine Winton, who attended the official opening on Tuesday, expressed her satisfaction that the upgrades were completed just in time for the new school year. "These modern spaces provide contemporary learning environments for students and staff in sporting, performing arts and STEM programs," she stated.

Conversion of Existing Facilities

As part of the extensive renovation works, the college's existing gymnasium has been creatively repurposed into modern drama and dance facilities. This conversion allows for enhanced performing arts programs within the school.

Furthermore, the existing drama room has been transformed into a staff room, while the previous dance room has been converted into purpose-built science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) facilities. These changes reflect the school's commitment to providing specialized learning areas for critical educational disciplines.

Community Impact and Political Support

Kingsley MLA Jessica Stojkovski, who was also present for the official opening, emphasized the positive impact of these upgrades on the local community. "I know these new facilities are a huge win for local families, students, and teachers at Greenwood College," she remarked.

The school, located in Perth's northern suburbs, had 944 students enrolled from years 7 to 12 during the second semester of last year. These new facilities are expected to benefit this substantial student population directly.

Completion Timeline for Remaining Works

While the sports hall has been completed and opened, additional works are still underway at Greenwood College. The remaining renovation projects are scheduled to be fully completed by October 2026, ensuring that the entire $18.4 million investment will be realized within the current year.

This comprehensive upgrade comes at a fitting time as Greenwood College celebrates five decades of educational service to the community, blending historical significance with modern educational infrastructure.
