International Student Too Frightened to Leave Home After Alleged Racist Assault in Sydney
A young international student from China is now too terrified to venture outside, even to attend her university classes, following a disturbing alleged assault in Sydney's central business district that appears to have been racially motivated. The incident has left the 23-year-old woman, who uses the alias Zili, with significant physical injuries and deep psychological trauma, prompting her to reconsider her future in the city.
Violent Confrontation at World Square Shopping Centre
New South Wales police issued a public appeal for assistance on Thursday after Zili was allegedly subjected to verbal racial abuse and physical assault at World Square shopping complex around 9:10 PM on April 12. According to her account, Zili had been filming a TikTok dance video with two companions when two women approached and began directing racist insults toward her, including using a slur that mocked Chinese speech patterns.
When Zili confronted the women about their behavior, the situation escalated dramatically. One of the women allegedly punched her repeatedly in the face and head with such force that she was knocked to the ground. "I didn't even register what was happening at first — I was being hit for a moment before it suddenly hit me: 'Oh my god, I've been attacked'," Zili recounted, emphasizing that she had never been involved in any physical altercation before this traumatic experience.
Security Footage Shows Disturbing Attack Details
Footage captured by one of Zili's companions appears to show a woman wearing a black hoodie dragging Zili by her hair during the assault. A second woman in a brown top then joined the attack, punching the student repeatedly. At one particularly alarming moment in the video, the second woman appears to pin Zili to the ground while attempting to continue the violent assault.
A 32-year-old security guard who attempted to intervene and stop the attack was also allegedly assaulted by the women before they fled the scene with a larger group. The guard immediately contacted emergency services and was assessed by paramedics at the location, while Zili received initial treatment for facial injuries before being transported to a nearby hospital for more comprehensive medical care.
Significant Physical and Psychological Injuries Sustained
Medical professionals diagnosed Zili with concussion and head injuries following the attack. She also suffered from significant eyelid swelling, extensive bruising, multiple scratches on her elbow, and two broken fingernails. The student reported that her memory of the incident became increasingly blurred in the aftermath, which doctors attributed directly to the concussion she sustained.
For nearly two weeks following the assault, Zili has experienced persistent headaches and overwhelming nausea that has made eating difficult. "I feel nauseous, and I can't even bring myself to eat," she revealed. The psychological impact has been equally severe, with the young woman now avoiding public spaces entirely. "I basically don't go out anymore these days. Whenever I see someone who looks even slightly young, I get scared, and my whole body starts shaking," Zili explained.
Long-Term Consequences and Future Plans
The incident has taken a profound psychological toll on Zili, who arrived in Sydney just last November to pursue her education. "Even though I believed I could manage everything independently, the experience has really affected me mentally," she confessed. The trauma has been so significant that she now plans to leave Sydney permanently after completing her studies in February of next year.
Zili urged other international students to remain particularly vigilant and aware of their surroundings when moving through the city. Meanwhile, police have established a formal crime scene at World Square and continue their investigation into the assault. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously to assist with their ongoing inquiries.
7NEWS.com.au contacted the security guard involved, who confirmed he was both a witness to and victim of the assault, though World Square management declined to comment on the incident when approached for a statement. The case highlights ongoing concerns about safety for international students in Australian urban centers and the potentially devastating consequences of racially motivated violence.
