Premier Guarantees Safety at Six Maddington Schools After Toxic Smoke Incident
Premier Roger Cook has provided a firm guarantee that six public school sites will be completely safe for the return of hundreds of students at the start of Term 2. This assurance comes exactly one week after the Maddington area was enveloped in toxic smoke from a significant blaze at a lithium-ion battery recycling facility.
"I have received a detailed report on the situation, and I can confirm that all affected schools have undergone a comprehensive and thorough cleaning process," Mr Cook stated to reporters on Sunday. "Therefore, we do not anticipate any danger whatsoever to students when they return to school for the commencement of Term 2."
Ongoing Hazmat Incident and Health Advisory
A Hazmat incident warning remained actively in place on Sunday as firefighters continued the critical task of removing hazardous materials from the site located on Burwash Place in Maddington. This operation follows the facility's fire outbreak on April 12, which has now spanned seven days.
The Health Department has issued specific advice to residents, urging anyone experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, burning eyes, or confusion to immediately leave the affected area and seek professional medical advice without delay.
Education Department's Response and Priority
A spokesperson for the Education Department emphasized that the health and safety of students is their absolute top priority. Acting on the direct advice of the Health Department, precautionary cleaning measures have been meticulously carried out at all six public school sites prior to their scheduled reopening on Monday.
The department is actively supporting these schools to ensure there is minimal disruption to educational activities as they prepare to welcome students back to their classrooms. This support includes logistical coordination and resource allocation to address any residual concerns.
