WA Premier Launches Full-Time Kindy Trial as Students Brave Scorching First Day
WA Premier Launches Full-Time Kindy Trial Amid Heat

Blistering summer heat and first-day nerves could not dampen the enthusiasm of Western Australia's youngest students as they embarked on their educational journeys on Monday. Four-year-old Oliver Millar was among the eager learners, excitedly showcasing the contents of his new backpack to Premier Roger Cook during a visit to Roleystone Community College.

Premier Cook Champions Full-Time Kindergarten Initiative

Premier Roger Cook was at Roleystone Community College to promote a trial of full-time kindergarten at five selected WA schools. As part of the initiative, 200 backpacks filled with educational supplies like crayons, books, puppets, and playdoh were distributed to the first children participating in the program.

Mr Cook emphasised the long-term benefits of the full-time kindy program, stating it is designed to provide a strong foundation for young learners. "It's an important opportunity for us to support those kids earlier in their lives, to make sure they hit all their education milestones," he said.

"Full-time kindy will help build confidence, resilience, language and social skills, developmental skills and it's the foundations that the kids need for the best possible start in life," the Premier added, highlighting the comprehensive approach to early childhood education.

Education Minister Reports Teacher Recruitment Success

Education Minister Sabine Winton provided an update on teacher numbers in public schools, noting a significant increase this year. Due to ongoing recruitment efforts, including the addition of more than 950 teaching graduates and 69 overseas teachers, the total number of teachers has risen by 3.3 per cent to 64,421.

This boost in staffing comes as two new public primary schools in Hilbert and Wellard opened their gates for the first time on Monday, expanding educational access in growing communities.

Students Embrace New Beginnings Despite Challenging Conditions

Despite the scorching temperatures, children like Oliver Millar were undeterred, diving into the start of what will be their next 14 years of schooling. The combination of heat and first-day jitters did little to curb their excitement, as they explored their new classrooms and materials.

The backpack program, a key component of the full-time kindergarten trial, aims to equip students with essential tools for learning and play, fostering an engaging and supportive environment from day one.
