A high-speed police chase through the streets of West Perth culminated in a crash and the subsequent arrest of a man found with a significant cache of drugs and weapons.
Dramatic Pursuit Through City Streets
The incident began on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 27, when officers from the Perth Police District attempted to stop a white Toyota Camry on Outram Street. The driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old man, failed to comply and sped away, initiating a pursuit.
The chase wound through several inner-city streets before reaching a dangerous climax. The fleeing Toyota collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Thomas Street and Newcastle Street. This collision forced the Toyota onto the footpath, where it finally came to a stop. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured in the crash.
Significant Haul of Contraband Discovered
Upon arresting the driver, police conducted a search of the vehicle. What they found was a substantial collection of illicit items. The search allegedly uncovered:
- A quantity of methylamphetamine (ice)
- A quantity of cannabis
- Multiple weapons, including a knife and an extendable baton
- A sum of cash suspected to be proceeds of crime
The 33-year-old West Perth man was taken into custody and faced the Perth Magistrates Court the following day, Wednesday, May 28. He has been charged with a range of serious offences.
Charges Laid and Police Commentary
The man now faces multiple charges including reckless driving to escape police pursuit, possession of prohibited drugs with intent to sell or supply, and possession of stolen or unlawfully obtained property.
Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Matthews of the Perth Police District commented on the incident, highlighting the dangers posed by such behaviour. He stated that the driver's actions endangered not only police but all other road users and pedestrians in the busy inner-city area. The swift response and investigation led to the removal of dangerous drugs and weapons from the community.
The accused man was refused bail and is scheduled to reappear in court at a later date. Police investigations into the matter are continuing.
