An elderly woman in Fairy Meadow has become the latest victim in a concerning car park scam that has been targeting individuals across New South Wales, according to police reports. The 73-year-old woman was walking to her car after shopping at Coles supermarket, located near the intersection of Princes Highway and Elliots Road, when she was approached. Police stated that the woman felt a nudge from behind, causing her to drop her handbag. A male individual then informed her that she had dropped her purse, leading her to retrieve it and return to her vehicle.
Upon checking her belongings, the woman discovered her ATM card was missing. Subsequently, eight fraudulent transactions were made, totaling $1,970. This incident occurred between 12:15 PM and 12:30 PM on March 4, 2026, and is part of a series of similar crimes reported since early January.

Police have identified multiple incidents with similar modus operandi in various regions. For example, on March 16, a 63-year-old woman in Batemans Bay was approached by a man and woman who claimed she had dropped a $50 note. When she denied ownership, they insisted and placed the money in her wallet. Shortly after, she realized her bank card was missing, with $980 withdrawn before the card was canceled.
Throughout March, similar reports have emerged in police districts including Lake Illawarra, Wollongong, South Coast, Newcastle, and Sydney. Investigators describe a consistent pattern where elderly victims are distracted by strangers claiming they dropped cash or wallets, allowing the perpetrators to steal wallets and use cards fraudulently.
Police Description of Suspects and Previous Arrests
Authorities believe a group of four individuals is involved in these scams. They are described as three males and one female, of Middle Eastern appearance, aged in their 40s, and speaking with a foreign accent. In early January, two men were arrested in connection with 18 similar incidents at shopping center car parks in locations such as Shellharbour, Unanderra, Albion Park, Sydney, Newcastle, Forster, and Wagga Wagga, with alleged offenses occurring from January 3 to 7.
