WA's Top 3 Road Trips Named Among Australia's Best for Families & Couples
WA's Top Road Trips Ranked Among Nation's Best

Western Australia's iconic coastal drives have claimed top spots in a new national ranking of the country's best road trips, offering perfect holiday inspiration for families, couples, and solo adventurers alike.

WA Routes Dominate National Leaderboard

Car insurance comparison experts at iSelect analysed 22 of Australia's most popular road trips to determine the best routes for different types of travellers. The results, released in late December 2025, placed three WA journeys firmly in the top tier.

The Cape to Cape, South West Edge, and Coral Coast Highway were all ranked among the top four trips for families. They scored highly due to their extensive mobile phone coverage, high density of rest stops, and manageable summer temperatures.

These same three routes also featured in the top six for romantic getaways and solo travel, cementing WA's reputation for world-class driving adventures.

What Makes These Trips So Special?

The 123-kilometre Cape to Cape drive, stretching from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin in the state's South West, earned extra praise for its stunning combination of food and scenery. The route is dotted with romantic restaurants, making it an ideal choice for couples.

For those seeking a more epic journey, the 12-day, 1200km South West Edge from Perth to Esperance and the sprawling 3277km Coral Coast highway from Perth to Exmouth offer unforgettable experiences for intrepid travellers. Both routes boast plenty of romantic accommodation options, contributing to their high rankings.

Reliable mobile phone coverage was a key factor, making these trips among the safest for those travelling alone, according to the analysis.

Expert Insights on Choosing a Route

iSelect general manager Adrian Bennett said the survey highlights that West Australians have some of the country's best road-trip routes right on their doorstep.

"Our analysis shows that choosing the right road trip isn't just about chasing the prettiest coastline, it's about finding routes that support a safe, smooth and enjoyable journey," Mr Bennett said.

"When you factor in things like mobile coverage, hospital access, rest-stop density and weather conditions, the differences between routes become far more meaningful for families, couples and solo travellers alike."

The findings provide a timely guide for holidaymakers planning their summer adventures, proving that a perfect Australian road trip balances breathtaking vistas with practical comforts and safety.
