Australia's Best Beaches 2026: Rottnest and Esperance Shorelines Crowned WA's Best
Australia's premier beaches for 2026 have been officially announced, with Western Australia shining brightly as Rottnest and Esperance coastlines secured prestigious positions among the nation's elite. The annual list, meticulously curated by expert and Tourism Australia's designated 'beach ambassador' Brad Farmer AM, narrows down hundreds of famous Australian shorelines into a definitive top ten ranking.
Rigorous Selection Process Highlights Hidden Gems
The conservationist embarked on the ambitious and demanding task of cross-checking every beach across Australia against a staggering 130 specific checkpoints. This year's evaluation placed greater emphasis on coastal spots located off the beaten track, celebrating quieter, more soulful destinations that define the country's coastal identity.
"This year's list is a celebration of the quiet, soulful spots that define our coastal identity and offer a true escape for those willing to wander a little further," Mr Farmer explained. The 2026 edition delivered a surprising winner, with Bates Bay in southern Sydney, New South Wales, unexpectedly taking the coveted top spot, though it remains a firm favourite among local residents.
Western Australia's Stellar Performances
West Australians can beam with immense pride as Pinky Beach on Rottnest Island earned a silver medal, securing second place nationally. Farmer enthusiastically praised Rottnest's shores for their crystal clear waters and sheltered pockets ideal for tourist setup, while still providing excellent swell conditions for experienced surfers.
"It offers a sunny north-eastern aspect, calm waters and shallow reefs dotted with seagrass that gently deepen for snorkelling," he detailed. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the beach from the nearby Bathurst Lighthouse, or take a short trip to local restaurants and accommodation options in the vicinity.
In a massive boost for the Great Southern region, Hellfire Bay located outside Esperance was named the fifth best beach in Australia. Often overshadowed by the world-renowned Lucky Bay, the stunning views and pristine waters within Cape Le Grand National Park compelled Farmer to highlight Hellfire Bay's exceptional qualities.
Hellfire Bay's Natural Allure and Preservation
Locals are well-acquainted with the spectacular views at this remote gem, where the stretch is frequently visited by curious kangaroos and pods of dolphins swimming peacefully in the calm waters. "The contrast between the pale sand, rounded boulders and shifting ocean colours is striking, and it changes with the light throughout the day," Farmer remarked.
Despite surrounding beaches being beloved for their 4WD accessibility, Hellfire Bay diverges by requiring travellers to walk along its white sands, a factor that has significantly contributed to preserving its natural beauty and pristine condition.
Controversy and Historical Context
While the list highlights some of Australia's most remarkable beaches, not everyone agreed with the final rankings. Today show host Karl Stefanovic took a strong stance against the list, stating: "I think it's the worst list I've ever seen." This marks the second consecutive year that Farmer's list has featured two Western Australian beaches, following Little Lagoon and Scarborough Beach securing fifth and eighth places respectively in the 2025 rankings.
