Port Douglas Family Launches $2.5m Luxury Catamaran to Boost Tourism
New Luxury Catamaran Launches in Port Douglas

A long-standing family business in Port Douglas has made a major investment in the region's tourism future, launching a brand new, multi-million dollar luxury catamaran to service the iconic Low Isles.

Multi-Million Dollar Investment for an Iconic Experience

The local operator, Quicksilver Group, has unveiled its new vessel, the 'Wavedancer Low Isles'. This impressive catamaran represents a significant investment of $2.5 million and is set to replace the previous vessel that had been serving the popular destination for over two decades.

Owned and operated by the Vlassoff family, who have been pivotal in Far North Queensland's tourism sector for more than 40 years, this move underscores a strong vote of confidence in the region's post-pandemic recovery. The new catamaran is a direct response to growing visitor numbers and a desire to elevate the customer experience to new heights of comfort and style.

Enhanced Comfort and Capacity for Visitors

The new 'Wavedancer Low Isles' has been designed with both passenger comfort and operational efficiency in mind. It boasts a larger capacity, able to carry 145 passengers, which is an increase from the previous model. This allows more visitors to enjoy the stunning coral cay and its surrounding reef each day.

Key features of the luxury catamaran include:

  • A more spacious main deck area for relaxed cruising.
  • An enhanced upper viewing deck, offering 360-degree panoramas of the ocean.
  • Improved facilities for snorkelling and marine discovery activities.
  • A design focused on stability and a smooth ride, enhancing guest comfort.

The vessel will operate daily tours to the Low Isles, a picturesque coral cay located about 15 kilometres offshore from Port Douglas. The trip is renowned for its beautiful lagoon, abundant marine life, and historic lighthouse.

A Family Legacy Supporting Local Tourism

Tony Vlassoff, a director of the Quicksilver Group, emphasised that this investment is about more than just a new boat. It's about continuing a family legacy and supporting the local economy. The company is a major employer in the area, and this upgrade secures jobs and stimulates further tourism spending in Port Douglas and Cairns.

The catamaran was constructed by Aus Ships in Henderson, Western Australia, showcasing Australian marine manufacturing capability. Its deployment is timely, aligning with a strong resurgence in domestic and international travel to Tropical North Queensland.

Industry experts see this kind of private investment as crucial for maintaining Queensland's competitive edge in the premium tourism market. By offering a superior product, operators like the Quicksilver Group help attract visitors seeking high-quality, memorable experiences, which in turn benefits hotels, restaurants, and other local businesses throughout the region.

The launch of the 'Wavedancer Low Isles' marks an exciting new chapter for one of Port Douglas's most beloved tourist excursions, promising visitors an even more exceptional way to explore the natural wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.
