Maryna Fewster Joins WA Tourism Board

The Cook Government has announced three new appointments to the influential Tourism Western Australia board, with Seven West Media WA chief executive Maryna Fewster taking a prominent role. This strategic move aims to propel the state's tourism industry toward a ambitious $25 billion target by 2033.

High-Profile Appointments to Drive Tourism Growth

Ms Fewster, who has led Seven West Media in Western Australia since 2018, is joined by former City of Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge and tourism expert John Lee as commissioners. Each will serve a three-year term on the board, which plays a crucial role in shaping the state's tourism strategy.

As the head of one of WA's leading media organisations, Ms Fewster oversees iconic brands such as The West Australian, PerthNow, The Nightly, and Seven, along with numerous regional publications. Her extensive experience in media and advocacy for Western Australia positions her as a key figure in promoting the state as a premier tourism destination.

Expertise and Enthusiasm for WA Tourism

In response to her appointment, Ms Fewster expressed great excitement about the opportunity to elevate Western Australia's profile globally. She described the state as "the best kept secret in the world" and emphasised her personal connection to its natural beauty.

"I have lived in lots of places, but this is the most beautiful state, I am proud to call home," she said. "Just thinking about Rotto makes me smile - every corner of our State is special, and the more people who know about it the better."

Beyond her media role, Ms Fewster has been instrumental in the success of Telethon in recent years and has served on the board of Celebrate WA. She also holds a directorship at Crown Perth, further demonstrating her deep involvement in WA's community and business sectors.

Government Backing and Strategic Vision

Tourism Minister Reese Whitby highlighted the importance of these appointments during what he described as a crucial period for the tourism industry. He welcomed the new commissioners, noting their diverse backgrounds would enhance the board's existing expertise.

"The WA Government welcomes the addition of Maryna Fewster, Hannah Fitzhardinge, and John Lee as Tourism Western Australia Board Commissioners, adding to the Board's existing wealth of knowledge and building on our government's economic diversification strategy and creating jobs across the State through tourism," Minister Whitby stated.

He pointed to recent successes, including a record one million international visitors to Western Australia in the twelve months leading up to October 2025, as evidence of the sector's strong momentum.

Diverse Backgrounds Strengthen Board Capabilities

Ms Fitzhardinge brings valuable experience from her tenure as Mayor of Fremantle, a renowned tourism hotspot. Her background includes board director roles with ARTRAGE and the Rottnest Island Authority, providing insights into both cultural and natural attractions.

Mr Lee, as director of John Lee Consulting, offers extensive expertise in sport and tourism. He holds positions with organisations such as the Australian Olympic Committee and has previously served as Director General of Queensland's Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport, as well as the Department of Premier and Cabinet in New South Wales.

Continuity in Leadership Roles

The board also sees continuity in key positions, with Perth Airport chief executive Jason Waters assuming the role of Deputy Chair. Chair Di Bain will continue leading the board until 2028, ensuring stability and long-term planning.

Additionally, former Australian cricketer and WA Cricket CEO Christina Matthews has been reappointed for another three-year term, bringing her sports administration experience to the tourism strategy.

These appointments reflect a concerted effort by the Cook Government to leverage diverse expertise from media, local government, and global sport sectors. The goal is to build on current tourism successes and drive further growth, ultimately contributing to economic diversification and job creation across Western Australia.
