The owners of a remote luxury resort in Western Australia's Kimberley have announced a reopening date, just months after the property was ravaged by a severe tropical cyclone. The Berkeley River Lodge is scheduled to welcome guests back from May 1, 2026, following extensive repairs.
A Direct Hit from Cyclone Fina
In November, the secluded getaway received a direct hit from Tropical Cyclone Fina as it tracked through the region as a powerful category three system. The storm's ferocious winds caused major destruction at the lodge, which is only accessible by air or sea.
Co-owner Rachel Bromage described the event as feeling "the full force" of the Kimberley's untamed power. Of the resort's 20 luxury villas, three were completely destroyed and two others sustained significant structural damage. The staff accommodation quarters were also extensively damaged.
Rebuild Efforts Already Well Underway
Fortunately, no guests were present during the cyclone as the visitor season had concluded, and two on-site caretakers emerged from the event safely. The timing was particularly poignant as the lodge was nearing the end of a comprehensive three-year refurbishment.
"We are very grateful that completed upgrades from the last two off-seasons were not affected," Bromage said, highlighting that the pool decking, balcony decking, interior floors, and open-air bathroom walls survived intact. The central lodge building also escaped major impact.
Recovery efforts began almost immediately. Tradespeople and key contractors were on site within a week of the cyclone passing. The initial phase focused on restoring essential services and clearing the widespread debris.
On Track for a 2026 Season Comeback
Repairs to roofing, decking, and exterior cladding are now progressing rapidly, with final interior finishes to be completed shortly. The unique logistical challenge of the remote location is being managed with multiple barges scheduled to deliver new furniture over the coming months.
"The majority of villas received superficial damage that can be restored with our planned refurbishment," Bromage stated, expressing confidence in the May 1 reopening date for the 2026 season. The rebuild integrates the necessary repairs into the lodge's existing renovation plans, marking a resilient comeback for one of the Kimberley's most exclusive retreats.
