France Maintains Premier Position as World's Most Visited Country

France has once again secured its status as the most visited country globally, according to the latest tourism report released by the French Ministry for Tourism. The data for 2025 reveals that the nation welcomed an impressive 102 million international visitors, marking an increase of 2 million from the previous year. This achievement not only reinforces France's leadership in the tourism sector but also highlights its ambitious goal to become the world's leading sustainable tourism destination by 2030.

Key Visitor Trends and Growth Areas

The report provides detailed insights into the sources of France's tourism influx. European nations continue to be major contributors, with significant numbers of visitors arriving from Italy, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Notably, there was a substantial surge in German tourists, with arrivals increasing by nine percent compared to the previous year. Additionally, North American visitor numbers saw a sharp rise, particularly from the United States, where arrivals grew by more than 10 percent.

Serge Papin, the Minister for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, Trade, Crafts, Tourism and Consumer Affairs, expressed pride in France's tourism success. He stated, "France is a great tourism nation. Let us be proud of it, and above all, let us remain so." This sentiment underscores the country's commitment to maintaining its premier position while advancing sustainable practices.

Economic Impact and Visitor Spending

The tourism boom in France has also translated into significant economic benefits. The report indicates that international tourism revenue increased by nine percent year-on-year, reaching a total of $126.5 billion (€77.5 billion). Furthermore, the average spend per international visitor rose to $1,240 (€760) per stay, reflecting higher engagement and expenditure among tourists. These figures demonstrate the vital role tourism plays in France's economy, supporting local businesses and communities.

As France looks ahead, the focus on sustainability aims to balance tourism growth with environmental and social responsibility. The country's strategy includes promoting eco-friendly travel options, preserving cultural heritage sites like the Louvre Museum in Paris, and enhancing visitor experiences through innovative initiatives. This forward-thinking approach positions France not only as a top destination but also as a leader in responsible tourism practices.
