Colombian Designer Johanna Ortiz Brings Female Empowerment to Luxury Yacht Experience
While budget-friendly travel options remain a priority for many readers, occasional glimpses into the world of high-end luxury can offer inspiring stories. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection has recently unveiled a groundbreaking collaboration with Colombian fashion designer Johanna Ortiz, merging opulent travel with a powerful social mission focused on female opportunity and empowerment.
A First-of-Its-Kind Takeover at Sea
The Ritz-Carlton team has introduced what they describe as a "first-of-its-kind takeover at sea" aboard their super-luxury yacht Ilma. This innovative partnership features Ortiz's signature prints transforming the yacht's pool and lounge areas, celebrating the vessel's northern winter season. The Pool Deck and Observation Terrace will continue to showcase these designs as the ship transitions into the summer months.
"Johanna Ortiz brings an unmistakable point of view that embodies culture, emotion, and beauty in motion," stated Gaby Aiguesvives, Chief Marketing Officer of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. "The brand's vision aligns naturally with how we curate our voyages, where thoughtful design and storytelling enhance every moment on board."
Signature Prints and Design Philosophy
The takeover is anchored by Ortiz's custom collection titled Tropical Exuberance, which draws inspiration from the Caribbean flora and landscapes that shaped her early years. Upper decks feature her signature La Rumba and La Siesta prints, each representing distinct travel moods.
"La Rumba and La Siesta reflect two moods I love when I travel, moments of celebration and moments of pause," explained Johanna Ortiz. "Both are deeply connected to nature, craftsmanship, and the joy of living life."
About the Luxury Yacht Ilma
Ilma, which means "water" in Maltese, debuted in September 2024 as the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's second superyacht. The vessel accommodates up to 448 guests across 224 suites, each featuring a private terrace. Onboard amenities include five dining venues developed in collaboration with renowned chefs Fabio Trabocchi and Michael Mina, seven bars, a wine vault, a top-deck entertainment space, a signature marina providing direct sea access, and The Ritz-Carlton Spa. Ilma primarily sails Mediterranean and Caribbean routes.
Johanna Ortiz's Commitment to Social Change
Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz studied fashion design in New York and Paris before returning to her homeland to build her brand. Beginning in 2003 with a resort collection based on swimwear, she has since developed a global luxury lifestyle brand with a strong social conscience.
Ortiz demonstrates her dedication to female empowerment through her business practices, employing a team of more than 460 people, 78 percent of whom are women. Many of these women serve as heads of their families and households, creating meaningful economic opportunities.
Her commitment extends to the "Escuela Johanna Ortiz," an on-site program offering couture-level seamstress training to local vulnerable and at-risk populations. This initiative has already helped more than 350 individuals achieve economic independence and emotional resilience through skilled employment.
This collaboration between luxury travel and socially conscious fashion represents a unique convergence of industries, demonstrating how high-end experiences can incorporate meaningful social impact while celebrating cultural heritage and design excellence.
