AJK Events Management is elevating the Illawarra region through quality events, as highlighted by a recent feature in the Illawarra Mercury. The business, led by executive director Kate Hammond, has become a finalist in the Business Woman of the Year and Best Small Business categories at the 2026 Illawarra Women in Business (IWIB) Business Women's Awards, coinciding with the organisation's 20th anniversary.
From Humble Beginnings to Industry Recognition
Kate Hammond started AJK Events Management in Unanderra and has grown it into a respected Illawarra business offering event planning, coordination, and catering for weddings, corporate functions, and large-scale events. The company focuses on small details to ensure each event reflects the client's vision and exceeds expectations. Kate's work has earned multiple industry accolades, including recognition at the Wedding Industry Awards, Australian Wedding Awards, and Event Specialist of the Year at the 2025 Prestige Awards. These achievements help position the Illawarra as a destination for high-quality events.
Meaningful Recognition on International Women's Day
Kate described being named a finalist on International Women's Day as especially meaningful. She said, "It was the best news to receive. Being named a finalist in both Business Woman of the Year and Best Small Business is something I'm incredibly proud of. It's a reflection of resilience, growth and the power of backing yourself and your vision." Kate added that the recognition reflects the passion, resilience, and consistency behind her business. "Every event is personal, and that genuine connection is what sets us apart," she said.
Community Impact Beyond Events
Known as 'Kitchen Kate' at Wollongong Flexible School, Kate's impact extends beyond events. The school supports disengaged young people through alternative education pathways, strengthening youth connections, community, and culture. Through her Hospo Crew program, Kate mentors students in hospitality, helping them develop practical skills, confidence, and future opportunities.
Balancing business ownership with family life, Kate also plays a key role in the local events and tourism landscape. She regularly works at The Taphouse at The Groundz Precinct and contributes to major functions at Wollongong Surf Leisure Resort, including international events such as the UCI Cycling Championships and the 2025 World Triathlon. She caters for international athletes and guests, helping put the Illawarra firmly on the global map.
Extensive Community Involvement
Kate's community involvement is extensive. She supports organisations including the Country Women's Association Dapto Branch, Animal Care Collection Illawarra Inc., and Need a Feed. She also sponsors Battle of the Businesses, supporting the Murchie brothers on behalf of WM Painting & Decorating, and is assisting with the upcoming Shannan Taylor function. Looking ahead, Kate plans to launch a mentorship program for young women in the Illawarra, continuing her focus on building confidence and creating opportunities.
A Journey of Determination and Purpose
Kate's journey reflects determination, balance, and purpose, demonstrating that true success lies not only in business but in elevating her region, strengthening community, and inspiring others.
