The International Sport College Australia (ISCA) is bridging the gap between classroom learning and the high-pressure world of professional sport. Based in Sydney and Moore Park, the college has evolved from a small intake of 11 student-athletes in 2019 into a leading tertiary institution for school-leavers.
Diploma of Sport Management (High Performance)
ISCA offers a one-year Diploma of Sport Management (High Performance) that covers sports marketing, psychology, nutrition, and coaching. The program emphasises work-integrated learning, requiring at least 75 hours of industry experience. General manager Ian Evans says this practical immersion sets the institution apart.
"Our purpose is to ensure graduates have the required skills to work within the sports industry," Mr Evans said. "All students complete an internship, which allows them to bridge the gap between theory and practice."
Partnership with Sydney Swans
A key advantage for ISCA is its partnership with the Sydney Swans. Students study at the club's Moore Park headquarters, gaining behind-the-scenes access to one of Australia's most respected organisations. They assist with game day operations, fan engagement, corporate events, and the AFLW program.
Robbie Thomas from the Sydney Swans highlighted the benefits: "It's been great to have the first ISCA x Swans Diploma cohort around the club this year and see how quickly they've embraced the experience. They've brought great energy, helped out across matchdays and club events, and really immersed themselves in the environment here at the Swans."
"What's been most exciting is seeing the students gain exposure to different parts of the industry and build genuine connections within the club. For young people looking to work in sport, having the chance to learn inside a high-performance environment and be part of a professional sporting organisation day-to-day is a pretty unique opportunity."
Growth and Success
Despite challenges from COVID-19, which tested the college's hands-on coaching and strength and conditioning practicals, ISCA has maintained consistent growth over seven years. Alumni include emerging NRL stars Kaeo Weekes (Canberra Raiders) and Jamie Humphrey (South Sydney Rabbitohs).
Looking ahead, the college aims to sustain its professional expertise while reflecting the values of its top-tier partners. "We rely on the success of our graduates," Mr Evans said. "Watching their progression from students to securing employment at organisations like the NSW Waratahs is the best outcome we can hope for."
ISCA is located near major transport centres including Central train station. The next open day will be held at the Sydney Swans facility during the July school holidays.
